If you’ve ever stepped into the Deseret Industries location where Yolanda works, you’ve probably heard her greet you.

“My supervisor tells me, ‘We love it. You practically catch every person,’” she shares.

As a cashier, Yolanda is often the first and last interaction DI customers have, which motivates her to create a positive atmosphere as they come and go. She also recognizes that communication and friendliness are important skills related to her career goals, so she is focused on keeping them sharp.

Yolanda previously worked as a certified nursing assistant, but after being in a car accident, she was physically unable to immediately return to the field. In response, she worked with the bishop in her area to receive a referral for employment at Deseret Industries

“I was thrilled when I got the job here because I needed some positivity in my life,” Yolanda says. “It’s a job training program, so I was thinking I could learn some things too.”

Although she is committed to returning to the medical field, Yolanda has embraced the chance to build new skills and prepare for the future. She has learned hard skills like cashiering and soft skills like how to approach goals at a realistic pace. Yolanda also met with a development counselor at DI, who gave her an assessment to help her discover other interests she has.

“It’s been eye-opening for me,” she shares.

During her year in the DI job training program, Yolanda has consistently enjoyed positive interactions with supervisors, associates, and customers. She particularly appreciates how sincere and mindful DI staff have been.

“I’ve met some awesome people at Deseret Industries,” Yolanda says. “I have had a great experience because they’re caring. I haven’t been perfect, but they’re working with me, so I definitely want to help as much as I can. I try to do everything that I’m supposed to.”

Her supervisor, Brad, attests to the fact that her dedication and attention to detail have allowed her to thrive as a DI associate.

“Yolanda is one of our hardest and most focused workers,” he says.

Yolanda has also seen firsthand how her work and the effort of Deseret Industries as a whole are making a difference for those in her community. In addition to providing low-cost goods, Deseret Industries seeks ways to address local needs—many of which are met through bishops’ orders and community grants, providing individuals with access to clothing and essential household goods.

“Those are really excellent,” Yolanda says. “I just think it’s an awesome thing Deseret Industries does for people.”
