Traveling on the Cheap with Thrift Store Gear

The word on everyone’s lips these days is “travel.” We’re right in the middle of summer vacation, and many people are purchasing plane tickets, taking road trips, and visiting faraway places. Travel expenses can add up quickly, but buying secondhand gear at Deseret Industries can help you save your pennies for exciting experiences during your vacation, like exploring museums and indulging in local cuisine.

Here are several travel items you can get on the cheap from DI:

1. Luggage. High-quality luggage is a big travel expense, but it can be avoided by checking our yard area for duffel bags, rolling suitcases, and carry-on bags.

2. Travel-size blow-dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. Did you know you can get hairstyling equipment at DI? Find travel-sized versions that will easily fit easily in your bags.

3. Cameras and camera bags. Taking photos while on vacation can help you remember your adventures for years to come. For cameras, look in the glass collectibles case, and search the purses and backpacks for bags to carry your lenses and spare batteries.

4. Travel diary. In addition to that camera, find an unused journal to help you document your trip.

5. Travel books and guidebooks. Going somewhere new? Find guidebooks and language dictionaries to help you map out your itinerary and communicate effectively with the locals.

6. Books. Vacations are great opportunities to catch up on reading. Pick up a novel to read on your flight or at the pool. For road trips, look for audiobooks.

7. Clothes. Jackets, coats, shorts, T-shirts—DI has clothing for all kinds of weather. Depending on what you’re planning for your trip, you might need clothes that you don’t already have, such as hiking pants or rainboots. If you need something you aren’t planning to wear often, you can purchase an inexpensive item at DI rather than invest a lot of money elsewhere.

8. Camping gear. Stock up for a weekend in the mountains with sleeping bags, camp chairs, and camp stoves from our yard area.

9. Reusable water bottles. Staying hydrated and healthy on vacation will help you make the most of your travels.

10. Hats and sunglasses. Visors, baseball caps, beach hats, and sunglasses can protect you from the sun, and the hats can also take care of bad hair days while on the road.

11. Resistance bands and jump ropes. Many people worry about keeping up with their fitness routines while away from home. Resistance bands and jump ropes are an easy way to do that without burdening your suitcase with heavy weights.

12. Headphones. Nothing speeds up a long flight like listening to your own music or watching a movie.

13. Bags. Backpacks, toiletry bags, beach bags—find whatever kind of bag you need at DI.

14. Sandals. Walking shoes or hiking boots are often best to get new and break in yourself, but sandals are a different story. if you’re going to the beach or to the pool, DI is a great resource for footwear.

15. Plastic containers, bottles, and dishes. Find containers to hold snacks, travel-size bottles to fill with shampoo, or dishes to use while camping.

16. Combination or luggage locks. Keep your luggage secure when staying at a hostel or when traveling on trains and buses.

17. Entertainment for kids. Flying or driving long distances with kids can be difficult. Buying new toys, books, and DVDs at DI can help keep the kids entertained during those hours.

18. Brand-new sheets, towels, socks, and underwear. These items are available from DI’s “new -value” line. Bring along your own linens if you’re staying with a friend or at a hostel, or get some new essentials before you pack.

Getting these items at DI can help you save money on travel gear so you have more money for your actual vacation. While you’re out exploring the world, consider stopping by a local thrift store as well; you just might find some great souvenirs!
