Meet Arnie: Associate Profile

DI associate Arnie is an example of hard work and persistence. He enrolled in the Deseret Industries job training program 18 months ago and recently got a warehousing job at a local business.

Arnie left his native country of the Philippines more than 20 years ago to come to the United States. His experience working as a chef opened doors for him, but Arnie ultimately hoped to learn more. That’s what led him to DI.

“I have learned how to [prepare for] a new job,” Arnie says. “I have learned a lot about work and behavior and responsibility and respect.”

Like all DI associates, Arnie has trained through the Ready for Work program, which teaches important workplace behaviors, such as attendance, punctuality, and dress and grooming. But Arnie has also gained other useful skills.

“I have learned a lot of different kinds of work,” Arnie says. “DI trained me as a cashier.”

One of Arnie’s favorite things about working at DI is the opportunity to be part of a team. He appreciates the support he receives from his coworkers.

“The associates are friendly,” Arnie says. “They smile at each other, respect each other, and help each other.”

In addition, Arnie notes the operational supervisors—sometimes known as job coaches—who play an essential role in helping associates with professional development.

“They are kind,” Arnie says. “They help us and ask what we need.”

When he reflects on his experience as a DI associate, Arnie can see how far he has come.

“[Working at] DI has changed me because it improved my quality of work,” Arnie says.
