Zach’s actions, both big and small, have had a positive impact on the associates he works with at Deseret Industries. In his role as a development counselor, Zach has not only played an important role in the growth journey of associates—he has also been able to fulfill his desires to help others overcome challenges.  

“It’s rewarding to see the progress of associates as I meet with them,” Zach says. “It’s uplifting to see the staff and associates lift each other up and overcome obstacles together.” 

Through DI’s job training program, associates are empowered to build better lives for themselves. The program includes coaching from operational supervisors and guidance from development counselors, as well as opportunities to practice important workplace behaviors, develop marketable skills, and build confidence. 

“We get a lot of people who have barriers to employment,” Zach says. “The job training program helps people who have limitations find a place to grow.” 

Prior to coming to Deseret Industries, Zach completed a master’s program in social work.  He learned about the DI development counselor job during a career fair and pursued a position. 

“It sounded like a unique opportunity to use my skills and training,” Zach shares. 

Zach was ultimately hired and quickly discovered that development counselors are part of what make the DI job training program unique. As a development counselor, Zach assists associates with challenges that may create barriers for employment. 

“My job is to help associates set goals for what they want to accomplish and then create a plan with them to do that,” Zach says.

Zach appreciates how his own life experiences have equipped him to be effective in his position, and he is eager to share the lessons he has learned. His background enables him to relate to associates and connect with them in important ways. 

“I have been in hard places myself, but I have also experienced overcoming hard times,” Zach says. “I want to help others do the same.” 

One of Zach’s favorite parts of the job is the chance he has to meet people and help them where they’re at. He is motivated by seeing people discover how they can rise above difficulty and reach their potential. 

“I run into people from all different walks of life,” Zach says. “It’s rewarding to help all of them, no matter how hard the challenges may be.” 

Zach acknowledges that the job isn’t always easy, but seeing the progress of associates makes it all worthwhile. 

“There may be hard days, but I have benefited from seeing the growth during the hard times,” Zach says. “This job has helped me grow as a counselor and develop more patience. It is also very rewarding to hear from associates who come back and tell us about their successes.”
