When Gayleen was hired to work at Deseret Industries, she was already familiar with the thrift store and donation center. In fact, DI has long been one of her favorite places to shop

“The shoes that I wore at church yesterday were from here,” Gayleen says with a grin.

After working in various customer service roles, Gayleen found herself in need of new employment. She turned to Employment Services for help with her resume but was still on the hunt.

“I had been looking for a job, and I hadn't found one for a while,” Gayleen shares. “My bishop said, ‘I can refer you to DI if you'd like.’”

The rest—as they say—is history. Gayleen is now utilizing her talents and building new skills as an associate in the DI job training program. She hopes to leverage her experience to secure a job as an input specialist for a medical company.

“My development counselor offered to help me learn Excel,” Gayleen says. “I was also asked if I wanted to be trained to be a cashier. I would like to learn cashiering, so that will be a good opportunity.”

With the support of her supervisor, Gayleen is also practicing important workplace behaviors such as teamwork, dependability, and professionalism, which are essential for her future career goals.

“I really like Lani—my job coach,” Gayleen mentions. “She’s super nice, and she understands me. She always checks how I’m doing—she’s just really nice that way.”

Lani was quick to highlight several of Gayleen’s strengths, noting how much she brings to the team.

“Gayleen is a very hard worker,” Lani says. “She’s positive and has a great attitude. I enjoy having her here.”

For Gayleen, one of the best parts is being able to make valuable connections. While she appreciates the chance to build relationships with other associates, she particularly enjoys interacting with shoppers.

“My favorite part of the job is being able to work with customers,” Gayleen says. “There was one who said, ‘I haven't been to church for 25 years—can you help me find a jacket that looks good?’ I like helping them find what they need.”
