Some people come to Deseret Industries looking for a great deal. Others come looking for a fresh start. For Mila, DI offered something she couldn't find anywhere else—a job that provided the understanding and flexibility she needed to navigate the current demands of her life while also preparing her for future employment opportunities.
Mila works in the processing area at Deseret Industries, where she sorts, evaluates, and prices incoming donations such as toys, books, and clothing. It's detail-oriented work that she's good at.
But Mila's story is about so much more than the job itself.

Before coming to the United States, Mila studied social communications and journalism at a university in her home country. She's smart, capable, and driven, but learning English has been her biggest challenge since arriving in the United States.
As part of the DI job training program, Mila has set personal and professional goals, including improving her English. Outside of work, she attends English classes every Thursday and takes advantage of opportunities to practice speaking English on the job.
That dedication to building her skills extends beyond the classroom. When a film crew recently visited the DI location where Mila works, she lit up. Her background in journalism and communications means a career in media isn't just a dream—it's a real possibility. The experience provided additional motivation for Mila as she looks toward future work opportunities.
"I need to practice my English," she says with a smile.

A big part of Mila's growth at Deseret Industries has come through working with her operational supervisor, Tess. Together, they focus on donation evaluation, building skills, and navigating day-to-day work with patience and encouragement.
"She is very attentive,” Mila says of Tess. “She says, 'You're doing good, it's good.'”
That kind of one-on-one support is at the heart of what the job training at Deseret Industries looks like—not just task training, but real human encouragement.

Within her role as a DI associate, Mila would like to be trained as a cashier next. For her, it's the perfect opportunity to practice speaking English, interact with customers, and improve her communication skills. Obtaining a cashiering certification through DI would also open additional doors for better employment.
Whatever comes next, one thing is clear: Deseret Industries has given Mila a strong foundation. Through job training, skills development, and a culture of genuine care, DI helps associates like Mila take meaningful steps toward the future they're working toward.
