From DI Associate to Administrative Assistant

Jimena’s Deseret Industries story began more than a decade ago when she decided to return to the workforce after several years as a stay-at-home mom. Finding employment wasn’t easy, but a conversation with her bishop about the DI job training program opened a new path forward. After applying, she was hired and began working as a DI associate.

Jimena’s supervisor at Deseret Industries noticed how quickly she picked things up. Over time, she took on greater responsibility and gained experience working with reports, bishops’ orders, community grants, and office operations. She moved into a lead role and was asked to help the store manager with office work in addition to her regular assignment as an associate.

Following her time in the DI job training program, her family moved to a new area. While searching for a job, she noticed a few administrative assistant positions open at nearby DI locations. Feeling qualified because of her previous work experience and the skills she gained through the DI job training program, Jimena applied and got the job.

As an administrative assistant at DI, Jimena has a wide range of responsibilities. She manages payroll, helps onboard new associates, maintains employee records, and ensures associates are connected to the right operations supervisors. She also handles direct deposits and government paperwork, helping associates navigate forms and processes they may find challenging—skills she was able to learn quickly thanks to the training she’d already received as an associate.

In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Jimena often translates for Spanish-speaking DI associates who are still learning English. She regularly has opportunities to help during team meetings, Ready for Work training sessions, and conversations with development counselors, bringing warmth and understanding to important conversations.

“What I really love is helping people,” Jimena says. “There are so many questions and things that associates learning English don’t understand. I’m there for them.”

Learning English was the hardest part of Jimena’s own path, and it’s often the first thing she talks about with associates who worry they aren’t capable or don’t think they’ll succeed.

“I tell them, ‘If I can do it, you can do it. If you feel like you don’t have enough English, don’t worry. If you put your effort in, you’re going to get it,’” Jimena states.

Helping associates feel supported goes beyond paperwork and translation. Jimena also enjoys creating a welcoming environment in the store. During the holidays, she organizes activities and decorates the store, bringing associates together and helping them feel appreciated.

Although Jimena doesn't supervise a team, she knows nearly everyone in the building. She often meets and talks with new associates several times before their first shift. That connection, she believes, is what matters most.

“They’re not a number—they’re a person who needs a second chance,” Jimena says. “We can give the chance to become better and better and find something amazing elsewhere through this experience.”

When Jimena shares what she wants people to know about Deseret Industries, she focuses on growth and the opportunity to work alongside people from diverse backgrounds.

“Deseret Industries is a good opportunity to grow—to find your goals, make your goals, and then feel that you achieved your goals,” Jimena says.
