Tips and Tricks for Thrifting

Thrifting is a great way to care for the earth, stretch your budget, and discover hidden gems. With some strategy and planning, you can often find the things you need at an affordable price.

Planning Ahead

Before you head out to thrift, consider these tips:

  • Make a thrifting list: Take a few minutes to assess your household needs. That could include anything from new shoes for the kids to another spatula in the kitchen.

  • Pack a box of things to donate at your local thrift store: Look through the items that are rarely used or may be cluttering your home, such as toys or decor. Determine what you no longer need and donate whatever could be useful for someone else.

  • Find your closest Deseret Industries or other thrift store location: Deseret Industries has 46 locations in the western United States. Use our store locator to see if there is one near you or find another thrift store in your area.

Maximizing Your Thrifting Trip

Now that you’ve done the hard part, you’re ready for the fun to begin. To make the most of your thrifting experience, remember these pointers:

  • Bring your thrifting list: Use your list to guide your thrifting journey. Visit the sections of the store with the items you are looking for. It may require a few trips to find everything you need, but that is often part of the fun.

  • Wear comfy clothes: If you are looking for clothes on your trip to the thrift store, wear an outfit that is easy to change out of or layer. This will simplify your experience when you hit the fitting rooms. Also make sure to wear comfy shoes for walking around.

  • Pick entertainment for the kids: Thrifting is often an enjoyable outing for the whole family. Swing by the books or toys at the beginning of your trip and pick out a few to keep the kids happy while you shop.

  • Bring a friend: Shopping with friends can be a great way to deepen relationships and make memories. Your friends can help you decide what outfits to buy, what home decor to get for the next holiday, or what items will be best for your next DIY project.
