Grateful and Growing: Angie’s Dedication at the Humanitarian Center

Angie, originally from Colombia, has been an associate at the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center for the past four months. During her time at the center, she has found a supportive community and meaningful work that is helping her to pursue further education goals.

As an associate in the job training program, Angie works in custodial services, where she is responsible for cleaning restrooms, dusting, and vacuuming offices. Her dedication to her work is evident in her meticulous attention to detail. Angie is especially grateful for the opportunity to learn English at the center.

“They pay four hours for you to work and four hours for you to learn English,” she says. “It is awesome and is what I need.”

Before coming to the United States, Angie worked as a pharmacist and secretary in Colombia. When she first arrived in this country, she worked in a restaurant and a hotel. Angie is now utilizing the skills she has gained from previous employment to contribute in her current role.

“It is my goal to become a pharmacy technician, but I need to improve my English first,” she shares.

Angie learned about the Humanitarian Center through her local church congregation and is grateful for the opportunities it has provided her. The diverse and inclusive environment has enriched her experience and broadened her perspective.

“My favorite part about working here is meeting and working with people from all different cultures,” Angie says. “I love learning about where they come from.”

When speaking of her supervisors at the center, Angie expresses her gratitude.

“My supervisors are so nice and patient,” she says. “When I don’t understand, they are always helpful and show me how.”

Outside of work, Angie enjoys spending time with her 8-year-old son, exploring the beautiful outdoors of Utah.

“I love to go outside with my son,” she says. “We go hiking in the mountains in the summer and play in the snow in the winter.”

The Humanitarian Center’s mission is to provide meaningful work and training opportunities for individuals in need, helping them become self-reliant and contributing members of their communities.
