“I want to be a professional musician,” says Marianna, who is trained in cello and even attended an institution focused on music education before moving to the United States from Europe. She is also working at Deseret Industries, which might make you wonder: What is someone with musical goals doing in the DI job training program?
For Marianna, earning an income is an important part of her career plan. But she will be the first to tell you that earning a paycheck isn’t the only way Deseret Industries is preparing her for the future.
Through the DI job training program, Marianna is learning important workplace behaviors, including teamwork, productivity, and dependability. These not only matter in a job—they also help individuals succeed in other aspects of life, such as educational pursuits.
“I want to study at a university or college,” she says. “I need a job to prepare.”
Additionally, Marianna is developing marketable skills. She received a cashier certification through Deseret Industries and has seen how the overall job training is preparing her for future employment opportunities.
“I like working at Deseret Industries because it gives me experience,” Marianna says. “I work as a cashier, so it’s experience for another job as well.”

Marianna’s development counselor has also helped her with challenges extending beyond the workplace. Through his help and the support of DI, Marianna enrolled in driving school so she can get her driver’s license.
“That has really helped me,” she shares.
Marianna’s operational supervisor, Brad, also plays a crucial role in her development. He functions as a job coach and helps with goal setting, but he has seen firsthand how Marianna’s dedication to her work and her ambitions has set her up for success.
“She’s very smart, and she’s very motivated,” Brad shares.
Marianna first learned about Deseret Industries from a friend, who encouraged her to pursue employment in the DI job training program. Since getting the job as a DI associate, Marianna has done her best to collaborate and contribute.
“Sometimes work is hard for me because this is the first job of my life,” she shares. “But being in this position has helped me. The experience has been very good.”
