How to Clean a Wicker Basket

Wicker baskets are a favorite find for thrifters, and it’s easy to see why. They’re perfect for organizing, decorating, or adding a touch of natural charm to any space. Whether you snagged yours at a yard sale or found it at your local Deseret Industries, chances are it might just need a quick refresh before finding a spot in your home.

Dust and dirt can settle into all those woven layers, but with just a few simple steps, you can clean your wicker basket and bring it back to life, making it ready for your home.

Supplies needed:

  • Sink or bucket

  • Clean water

  • Mild dish detergent

  • Paintbrush or scrub brush (clean and dry)

  • Damp cloth or wet scrub brush

  • Lint-free cloth

  • Toothbrush

  • Towel or spot for drying

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Wicker Basket

Step 1: Remove Dust and Debris

Start by removing any leftover items or debris inside the basket. Use a clean paintbrush or dry scrub brush to gently remove dust from all the woven areas. This helps loosen the buildup in hard-to-reach places.

Step 2: Rinse Lightly

Place the basket in the sink or a bucket and lightly rinse it with water. If your faucet has a spray feature, use that option. Otherwise, run the basket under water to remove surface dirt.

  • Tip: If you're outside, a garden hose works well too. Don’t soak the basket with water, just rinse it.

Step 3: Choose Your Cleaning Method

Light Cleaning:

This method is ideal for routine maintenance and light surface cleaning.

  • Mix mild dish soap with water.

  • Wipe the basket with a damp cloth or scrub gently with a wet brush.

Deep Cleaning:

This method is best for heavy buildup or baskets that need a deep refresh.

  • Submerge the basket in a sink or bucket of soapy water.

  • Scrub gently with a soft brush or toothbrush.

Step 4: Dry Completely

Let the basket dry completely before using it again. If the weather allows, place it outside in the sun.

Indoors, lay it on a towel in a space where it can dry naturally, preferably on tile or laminate flooring. Avoid storing it until it’s fully dry to prevent mold or warping.

Now that your wicker basket is clean, refreshed, and ready to be used for decor, storage, or organization, take a moment to appreciate how small acts of care can give new life to pre-loved items. Like the basket, many household goods still have plenty of life left in them—especially when passed on to someone who needs them.
