The Love of Good Bishops

“Having a good job was not the only blessing I received at this time.”

I came to Deseret Industries at a very difficult time in my life—I was struggling.  I had been through a divorce and found myself a single parent to my young daughter. I also was let go from a job I had been at for several years. I needed a job and we needed suitable housing. I met with my bishop who helped us find an apartment and furnishings. He also helped us by offering me a referral to Deseret Industries. I was very interested in what the DI program was about and how it could help me to improve my job skills while I supported myself and my daughter.

I took advantage of the programs that are offered at Deseret Industries. I pushed to become a lead in production before I moved on to the sales floor. I soon realized how blessed I was by having the opportunity to work at DI. I tried to advocate for the program by encouraging my coworkers and helping them with their challenges so they too could reach their goals.

Eventually, I was offered a business partnership with an optical business as their receptionist. This position fit well into my career goal for becoming an administrative assistant. At the end of the partnership, I was hired full-time.

Having a good job was not the only blessing I received at this time. After my daughter and I had settled into our new apartment, my new bishop and his family took us under their wings and we were invited to join their family for Family Home Evenings. We took the missionary discussions and I was baptized and confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
