Working toward a Better Life

“I had very little work experience, no high school diploma, and a very 'colorful' background.”

I joined the Deseret Industries (DI) training program fresh out of a program for women with drug and alcohol dependence. I had just moved to a family support center and truly wanted and needed a job. It was my goal to become self-sufficient and move forward to a better life.

When I discussed my needs with my bishop, I explained to him what a difficult time I was having finding a job. I had very little work experience, no high school diploma, and a very “colorful” background. He referred me to DI. They gave me a job!

At DI, I was welcomed without judgment. The managers saw in me the potential to become what I knew I could be. I worked in the back of the store in clothing processing, where I quickly became a lead to other associates. Part of the DI training program includes creating a development plan with a job coach and development counselor. From this, I learned how to set both short-term and long-term goals and how to accomplish them. I took courses such as budgeting, secrets to success, career workshops, computer classes, and supervisor classes. I was also fortunate to receive tutoring from a Church-service missionary, one of the smartest men I know! He helped me with my homework so I could earn my high school diploma.

My life is progressing as I move towards becoming self-reliant.  My desire is to help others in the same way I was helped. Without the help from DI, I would not be where I am in my life today. Thank you to all who have helped me on my journey!
