The Tools to Succeed

“To improve my potential job opportunities, my bishop recommended I join the Deseret Industries (DI) training program.”

I am from Germany, so English is my second language. I also have a hearing impairment which, when combined with my accent, makes my speech difficult to understand. As a result, I have struggled with maintaining employment. To improve my potential job opportunities, my bishop recommended that I join the Deseret Industries (DI) training program.

I really wanted to learn as much as I could. While working at DI, I trained in several departments, including pricing and customer service. My job coaches taught me the importance of being on time and what it means to be reliable and a good employee. I set goals, created a resume, and practiced for job interviews. Most important I was able to practice speaking so that I could be understood in English.

Because I was a hard worker and had proved myself, my development counselor set up a business partnership. This is where DI agrees to pay my salary for several weeks while I work and gain additional experience by learning on the job at a local business.

Through my DI experience, I have come to know great people. They have helped me find a way to become self-reliant with the tools I need to succeed. They have also brought me spiritually closer to my Savior. I know they love me.
