DI - A Privilege!

“With five words of English in my vocabulary, a bishop’s authorization, and desire, I was hired at Deseret Industries.”

I was struggling to provide even the basic needs for my young family when I heard some positive news from a friend in America. I was excited to learn there was a Church sponsored program that would allow me to work while simultaneously learning English and receiving the training necessary to achieve lasting employment. So with faith and hope in something better, we left our native country and headed to Utah. With five words of English in my vocabulary, a bishop’s authorization, and desire, I was hired at Deseret Industries.

The opportunity given to me to be a part of Deseret Industries was a great blessing for me and my family. I was always happy to be at work.  Any of the stresses I was feeling were left at the door as I submerged myself in learning English while assisting customers in the men’s clothing department. I enjoyed using my English to mentor new associates and teach them about what it means to have the privilege of participating in the Deseret Industries training program.

Through the DI program I was certified as a cashier and in operating a fork lift. I took ESL training off-site, and with the support and encouragement of my job coach, development specialist, and mentor, I was slowly learning English.  I then learned of training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and I was excited to be offered this opportunity. English proficiency was a must to pass the actual course exam, as well as the state practical and clinical exams, but I didn’t hesitate and was soon a Certified Nursing Assistant.

My strongest desire and concern has been to provide for my family. A position became available at a state hospital as a full time dietary aide. Having received my CNA and having experience as a cook in my native country, I was soon hired. I have since been promoted as one of the head chefs.  I am now financially secure, self-reliant, and have excellent benefits.  I will be forever grateful for the blessings that have come to me and to my family through the gospel and those who serve so faithfully at Deseret Industries.
