It was a big move to come back home with my son to Utah. I had lost my job of eight years as a switchboard operator when the company outsourced our office and laid us off. I made this decision to move after much thought and prayer, knowing that it would be challenging to find a new job. It was a challenge. After 10 months of job searching, I finally went to my bishop for some help. He directed me to Deseret Industries (DI). I thought DI was just another thrift store, but I soon learned that it had so much more to offer.
I was nervous about taking the position as an associate, because it meant being on my feet for six hours at a time. I had been in an accident that made it difficult for me to stand for long periods of time. With a lot of prayer and an understanding job coach, I was able to complete a six-hour shift and still do everything I needed to do after work.
DI encourages associates to enroll in classes or complete certification programs that meet their career goals. With their support, I completed classes in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and consumer finance. This was a direct answer to prayer, one I will never forget. Just before I was laid off of work, I had asked the Lord to help me obtain just a few more job skills so I could provide a better living for my son.
My life is richer having worked with the good people at DI. Their great examples gave me something to look up to and the confidence to trust in their guidance. They listened to me, inspired me, and understood just what to say to coach me in the right direction. I have great love and respect for them as they have helped me to grow and reach far beyond myself. I am grateful the Lord brought me here to His storehouse, and I treasure my experience at DI.
