A Second Chance

“My bishop and the Deseret Industries team never gave up on me.”

Deseret Industries has allowed me to triumph over seemingly impossible challenges and offered me a second chance to obtain a DI miracle in my life.

I was raised in an emotionally abusive home where I felt unloved and unwanted. Throughout my childhood, I struggled with deep feelings of worthlessness. I then married young and had three children. Over the years, my husband’s health deteriorated and I found myself as the primary breadwinner. Substance abuse, disability, legal problems, and many other issues tore the very fabric of my life and I struggled to hold it all together.

Ambitious and hardworking, I eventually found a good, steady job at the local library. I worked there for ten years. Unfortunately, my emotional health issues overcame me and I was fired from my job because of substance abuse. At this low point in my life, my bishop referred me to the Deseret Industries training program. I did my best, but I failed to triumph over my addiction and had to leave the program. At this point, I thought all was lost.

My bishop and the Deseret Industries team never gave up on me. When I was ready, I was given a second chance. I came back determined and eager to prove myself. I knew that my bishop and the DI staff cared and had not given up on me. Deseret Industries and other community programs teamed together so that I could complete my skills training. I eventually became a lead worker over other DI associates. I also obtained a new set of dentures. I now smile with confidence and the assurance that I am worthwhile and competent.

When my training was coming to an end, I began networking and landed a wonderful job at a local convenience store. I was only on the job for two days when someone from my community shared disparaging gossip about my past. I lost the job. Thankfully, my friends at Deseret Industries were there for me. I didn’t give up. I found a new position with even better pay, and am proving that I am a great employee.

I now have been clean and sober for more than two years, have a great job, and am active in church. I have become an example to my nine grandchildren that it is possible to change. Without the support of the staff at DI, I could never have achieved these amazing miracles in my life. Thank you for caring and never giving up on me.
