Grateful for Support

"I am confident that my new job would not have happened without the training program at Deseret Industries."

I have needed better employment for several years.  I discussed my situation with my bishop and he recommended I explore my interest in the medical field while working at Deseret Industries.  I knew that DI was a great thrift store, but that was the extent of my knowledge. I was surprised to learn about the many opportunities they provide.  I felt impressed that the DI was the direction I should go at this time.

My first assignment was in the clothing area on the sales floor.  I was nervous when I began because by nature I am somewhat shy and reserved.  This was a fast-paced department and I quickly found myself feeling overwhelmed.  There was terminology I was not familiar with and many new procedures to learn.  At the time, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stick with the program, but I’m glad that I did.  In time, I started to make friendships and the store operations became more familiar to me.  The store staff members were very understanding and helpful.   As I became better at my job, I started to feel more confident in my abilities.

After I was trained in the clothing area, I was given the chance to become a cashier.  Being a cashier frightened me, so I declined this opportunity several times.  The assistant store manager, however, believed in me and took great interest in my progress.  I put my trust in him and accepted the position.  I discovered that I enjoyed the assignment.  It helped me with my shyness, phone skills, and customer service abilities.

During my time at DI, I had a serious setback.  I had a major stroke that required brain surgery to remove a sizable blood clot. I returned to work to find a supportive staff who helped me to regain my confidence while I was working on getting stronger.

I will always be grateful to Deseret Industries for my job skills training, for supporting me through my illness, and most of all, for helping me to fulfill my goal of finding a job in a medical field.  I am very grateful for the financial assistance offered through DI for schooling.  With their help, I became certified in phlebotomy so I can pursue further training as an electrocardiogram technician. I am confident that my new job would not have happened without the training program at Deseret Industries.
