A Chance to Learn and Serve

“The DI training program gave me options that I never could have obtained on my own.”

I came to Deseret Industries with a few months of fast food experience and few prospects for a better job. The spiritual environment helped me stay focused on what is important in life, taking the frantic desperation out of the terrifying thoughts of unemployment and enabling me to have the confidence to move forward with faith. The DI training program gave me options that I never could have obtained on my own.

My job coach helped me to define my goals, both educationally and personally. I learned how to set both short term and long term goals and then work patiently toward achieving them. This skill has been immensely helpful, and I still use it to organize my day. Then, with the assistance of my mentor, I have developed excellent work habits and accomplished several difficult milestones in my development plan.

One critical milestone I achieved with the help of DI, was to successfully complete a training course and achieve certification in phlebotomy. In addition to being certified, I was provided an externship in the form of a business partnership. This allowed me to focus on my training and apply directly what I had learned to gain needed experience.

DI also gave me the skills for my job search. My counselors actively helped me to research job openings, stay organized, and be consistent with networking and in following job leads. Essentially, every career has some degree of customer service. From my training at DI, I had the invaluable experience of dealing with a very diverse group of customers where I needed to respond calmly and kindly in a variety of situations. This was a skill I could easily include on any resume and apply in most job interviews.

I know that the Lord helps us through other people. That is exactly what the Deseret Industries program represents. They gave me a chance to learn how to serve others, and they gave me a chance to be served. This training program has changed my life.
