Lulaca often says “thank you,” as if everybody he meets has somehow given him the opportunity to be here and to be free of fear. He is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and immigrated to the US during the war there. “They would have killed me if I stayed,” he says.

 

Deseret Industries is training Lulaca in the skills he needs. He unloads donations and trains on the forklift, hoping to get a warehouse job in the next few months. He’s taking English classes and loves Deseret Industries because there are “people from many countries, good people.”
